At just 19, Josh King embarked on an ambitious venture: to create a retractable game controller tailored for smartphones equipped with MagSafe technology. His initial 3D-printed prototype caught the eye of OhSnap, a company specializing in magnetic accessories. Their collaboration resulted in the MCON, a device that aims to streamline mobile gaming by eliminating the need for bulky attachments.
Compact Design Geared for Portability
One of the standout features of the MCON is its ability to attach to a smartphone without turning it into a cumbersome brick. When folded, the controller is nearly the size of a regular phone. Its MagSafe attachment allows for quick and easy setup and removal, eliminating the need for clamps or cables. When not in use, the controller retracts underneath the smartphone, reminiscent of the old sliding keyboard phones (I sure miss my Samsung D500).
Another key feature is its adjustable angle. Thanks to a hinged arm, the phone can be tilted slightly to improve visibility during gaming sessions, which is a real plus for extended play.
Technical Features and Compatibility
The MCON is equipped with modern technology to meet gamers’ expectations. It includes analog joysticks with Hall effect sensors, known for their resistance to drift—a common issue in other controllers. The device also features a complete set of tactile buttons, including triggers and top buttons, as well as foldable grips for a more comfortable hold.
In terms of connectivity, it operates over Bluetooth, making it compatible with MagSafe smartphones, whether they have a magnetic case or are used without any protection. Early tests indicate that it works well with most games, including those available through cloud gaming services and emulators.
Launch and Availability
OhSnap plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign on January 2, 2025, to fund production. The MCON will be showcased at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, which should help it reach a broader audience. Upon release, it will be available in two colors: black and white. There are also plans for a customizable version featuring mixed colors.
I’m definitely keeping an eye on this one, and you can bet I’ll be one of the first to order and review it thoroughly!
