Fans of The Last of Us were treated to an exciting teaser last week, reigniting the anticipation for what’s next in this post-apocalyptic saga. With season 2 now officially on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to dive into everything we know so far about the upcoming season, set to air on Max in France. (Spoiler alert: this article contains spoilers from season 1.)
When Will Season 2 Be Released?
Unfortunately, HBO has not yet given us a precise release date for season 2. However, the teaser does confirm that the next installment will arrive sometime in 2025. While filming has wrapped, some media outlets speculate that February could be the month we see the return of Joel and Ellie.
What Will Season 2 Be About?
Based on the teaser, season 2 is expected to stay true to the video game that inspired the show, although it won’t be an exact replica. If you thought season 1 was emotionally intense, prepare yourself for even darker and more dangerous storylines—no character is truly safe.
To recap, the final episode of season 1 left fans with a bitter twist. Joel rescues Ellie from the Fireflies, who had planned to operate on her to find a cure for the Cordyceps infection. However, the surgery would have killed her. Joel, unable to let that happen, kills everyone involved and lies to Ellie, telling her the Fireflies failed to find a cure.
Season 2 will take a significant time jump, much like the second game. Years have passed, and although Joel and Ellie still live nearby, their relationship has grown distant.
In interviews, the show’s co-creators, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, have hinted that season 2 will diverge from the second game in some areas while staying loyal in others. “It’s going to be different, just like this season was,” Druckmann shared. “Sometimes radically different, and other times nearly identical.” Mazin echoed this sentiment, adding, “It won’t be exactly like the game. It will be the series that Neil and I want to create.”
Who Will Be in the Cast?
Viewers will be pleased to see familiar faces return. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie, respectively. Alongside them, several new actors will join the cast, with Kaitlyn Dever confirmed to play Abby Anderson, a pivotal character in the story moving forward.
The season will also feature performances from Young Mazino, Isabela Merced, Danny Ramirez, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, and Jeffrey Wright.
Pedro Pascal, already a fan favorite, has hinted at what lies ahead for his character in interviews. “I think they will always find ways to build on the incredible source material and surprise us with how they adapt it for television,” he said. “But I wouldn’t want to spoil anything. Honestly, I don’t even have all the details myself yet.”
