What’s the Possible Release Date for The Last of Us Season 2?
While an official release date hasn’t been confirmed, HBO has hinted that season 2 will arrive sometime in 2025. According to David Zaslav, president of Warner Bros Discovery, The Last of Us will premiere early that year, following the third season of The White Lotus.
The writers’ and actors’ strikes in Hollywood in 2023 delayed production, but filming eventually began in Vancouver in January 2024. By August 2024, production had wrapped, and the season is currently in post-production.
What Will The Last of Us Season 2 Be About?
Season 1 covered the entire storyline of the first game, but as co-creator and writer Craig Mazin revealed in a 2023 interview, the second season will not cover all of The Last of Us Part II:
“We pretty much covered the first game’s entire story in season 1. What comes next is more sprawling and spread out in time compared to the first. There’s no way we can adapt it all in one season. Plus, we’ve already begun to introduce some original storylines, not just what’s in the game. We want to make sure we have the freedom to do things the right way.”
Neil Druckmann also confirmed that The Last of Us Part II will be adapted across multiple seasons, though he hasn’t provided specifics.
Spoiler Alert: If the second season follows the timeline of the game, it will take place four years after the events of season 1, with Ellie now 19 years old (which makes sense, as Bella Ramsey is 20). As in the game, the central theme will shift from love and friendship to vengeance and despair. Joel’s killing of Abby’s father sets off a brutal cycle of revenge—Abby will kill Joel, and Ellie will be consumed with a desire to hunt down Abby.
