This seemingly harmless drink may drastically speed up aging, scientists warn

Many of us reach for a fizzy soda without a second thought—but new research suggests that this sugary habit could be shaving years off your life at the cellular level.

The culprit revealed

Researchers analysed leukocyte DNA from 5,309 healthy adults in the 1999–2002 NHANES cohort¹. They found that daily consumption of a 20-ounce (591 ml) sugar-sweetened soda was associated with accelerated cellular aging equivalent to 4.6 years of telomere attrition².

Did you know? A 12-ounce (355 ml) can of soda typically contains around 39 grams of sugar—exceeding the American Heart Association’s recommended daily limit for women (25 g) and close to that for men (36 g).⁵

How sugar accelerates aging

When you gulp a sweet drink, your body must process a sudden sugar overload, putting stress on your metabolism. According to Dr Elissa Epel of UCSF, this constant strain not only disrupts blood-sugar control but also speeds up the “wear and tear” on our cells, effectively turning back our biological clocks faster than normal³.

The gut connection

A 2021 review in Current Nutrition Reports indicates that frequent consumption of sugary beverages may disrupt the gut microbiome, trigger inflammation and elevate oxidative stress—all drivers of premature aging⁴.

Did you know? Oxidative stress arises when reactive oxygen species overwhelm cellular defenses, damaging DNA, proteins and lipids; it’s implicated in diseases from diabetes to Alzheimer’s.

Smarter swaps for longevity

Swapping your soda for carbonated water with a squeeze of fresh lemon—or indulging in a cup of unsweetened green tea—can satisfy that craving for fizz without the cellular toll. Over time, these simple changes help protect telomeres, support gut health and keep both your body and your future self in better shape.
