Nintendo is often praised for its out-of-the-box innovations, but sometimes, its best ideas don’t come out of nowhere—they come from its own unfinished concepts. This appears to be the case with one of the Nintendo Switch 2’s most intriguing features: magnetic Joy-Con attachment. While it might seem like a fresh idea, the truth is, Nintendo had considered this design years ago when developing the original Switch.

The Magnetic Joy-Con Concept Was Always There
Recently, a surprising revelation from Kit & Krysta, former Nintendo of America employees, shed light on an early Nintendo Switch prototype. In a video shared on January 21, 2025, they revisited a key design choice Nintendo had made nearly a decade ago.
During the development of the original Switch, Nintendo experimented with magnetic attachment for the Joy-Con controllers. In fact, Yoshiaki Koizumi, a key Nintendo figure and producer behind several Mario 3D titles, explained the reasoning behind the final decision:
“We tried many different ways to connect the Joy-Con to the (Switch 1), and one of them at the time was using magnets (…) but during gameplay, sometimes the console would slip off your lap. Since we wanted something solid enough for players to hold while also keeping that satisfying snap of magnets, we ultimately designed mechanical rails that give you that ‘click.’”
From Rails to Magnets: A Course Correction
The mechanical rail system became one of the Nintendo Switch’s signature features, even inspiring the iconic “click” sound used in its trailers. However, despite the charm of the Joy-Con rail design, players soon noticed a major flaw: over time, the controllers became loose, creating an unstable connection when playing in handheld mode.
With the Switch 2, Nintendo is reportedly returning to its original idea, replacing mechanical rails with magnetic attachment. If implemented correctly, this could solve the long-standing issue of Joy-Con instability while retaining the satisfying snap that makes the system feel responsive and polished.
A Closer Look at the Switch 2 on April 2
With an official Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2, fans are eager to learn more about the Switch 2’s hardware, performance, and game lineup. While magnetic Joy-Con attachment is a promising quality-of-life improvement, Nintendo is expected to reveal additional surprises about its next-gen console.
For now, one thing is clear—sometimes, the best ideas don’t come from new breakthroughs, but from revisiting and refining old concepts that were ahead of their time.
