Meta Quest 3
As a reminder, the Quest 3 is a new model that incorporates three new sensors (including one for depth) clearly visible on the front enabling the user to see their environment in color and mixed reality (compared to monochrome on the Quest 2), displays with higher resolution (2064 x 2208 pixels per eye, compared to 2000 x 2040 pixels of the PS VR2), simplified adjustment of lens spacing via a dial, a new Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen2 chip promising to double the graphic power for improved graphics and smoother performance (a crucial aspect in VR to prevent nausea), 8 GB of RAM (up from 4 GB in the Quest 2), and a significantly more compact design than the Quest 2 to enhance comfort.
Over 7 Times Cheaper Than the Vision Pro!
Even though its technical specs are not as high-end as those of the Vision Pro, the Quest 3 is currently about 7.3 times cheaper than the Vision Pro, offering a robust catalog of VR experiences (though mixed reality experiences are still limited) and physical controllers in addition to hand and finger tracking. Meta continues to bring some of Vision Pro’s features to the Quest 3 through updates, like the ability to view spatial videos recorded with the iPhone 15 Pro and Vision Pro on the Quest, as well as a window management system similar to Apple’s offering.

Two Different Approaches to Mixed Reality
Ultimately, we see two contrasting visions of what a first mixed reality product should be. On one hand, Meta aims to replicate the success of Quest 2 with a more accessible yet technically limited device, and on the other, Apple introduces a high-end technology device with a steep price tag, which will inevitably limit its adoption. Moving forward, each company might try to tap into the other’s domain, with Meta possibly introducing a more upscale headset and Apple exploring more budget-friendly versions (though there’s a long road ahead). The battle over mixed reality is just beginning, and it’s up to you to decide how to engage with it.
