Upcoming Apple Innovations: What to Expect in the Coming Months

Apple is gearing up for an exciting start to 2025, planning to unveil several highly anticipated products featuring its latest technologies.

iPhone SE 4

The upcoming iPhone SE, set to debut in Spring 2025, marks a significant upgrade to the most budget-friendly model in the lineup. It’s expected to feature a design akin to the iPhone 14, ditching the home button for an edge-to-edge display, Face ID recognition, and of course, USB-C. Powered by the A16 Bionic chip, it will boast enhanced performance and 5G compatibility.

This new generation will also signal the end of the Home button and Touch ID, making way for Face ID and USB-C. In terms of performance, the iPhone SE 4 might include a single but substantial 48-megapixel rear camera, an A-series chip (likely from the iPhone 16, possibly rebranded as iPhone 16E), and 8 GB of RAM, all optimized for Apple Intelligence. Another major strategic shift: the integration of Apple’s first in-house designed 5G modem.

One big question remains how Face ID will be integrated into the display. Ross Young, an analyst at DSCC, recently stated that the iPhone SE 4 would feature a notch, confirming rumors of a design similar to the iPhone 14. Additionally, dummy models released earlier this week support this view, though sources seem less certain.

Noteworthy upgrades include a 6.1-inch OLED screen, a significant step up from the 4.7-inch LCD of previous models. According to supposed CAD files, this would be the largest iPhone SE ever, which might not please everyone.

Current rumors had hinted at a smartphone with ambitious specs: a 48 MP camera, a Dynamic Island, and a relatively modern design. These features seemed at odds with Apple’s intent to offer an economically priced iPhone with controlled costs. However, over time, some high-end technologies have become more mainstream and produced in larger quantities, making these speculations less unrealistic and more financially feasible.

MacBook Air M4

Apple also plans to release new 13 and 15-inch MacBook Air models equipped with the M4 chip at the start of 2025. These laptops will see a significant boost in performance thanks to the new processor, while maintaining their slim and light design. Initially, they are expected to include more RAM to support Apple Intelligence… Production of these models is set to begin soon, with a potential release slated between January and March 2025.

Indeed, the code from the final version of macOS Sequoia 15.2 revealed some details about these new models – which should be arriving shortly. This update included references to two screen sizes, 13 and 15 inches, and new model numbers A3240 (13 inches) and A3241 (15 inches). These MacBook Air will feature the M4 chip but will retain the same design.

As for new features, improvements to the camera are noted with the mention of an ultra-wide front camera (FaceTime HD? significant improvements for video calls and visual content), and support for the Center Stage feature.

iPad 11 and iPad Air

The iPad lineup will also be refreshed with the introduction of the 11th generation iPad and a new iPad Air. While details on these models are still limited, they are expected to offer enhanced performance and new features to enrich the user experience.

For the upcoming iPad 11, Apple is likely to stick to a 10.9-inch screen, similar to the iPad Air design, and include WiFi 6E (like the iPad mini 7). It might also introduce some trendy new colors. It’s worth noting that the iPad already has a USB-C port, but it could feature faster data transfer speeds. The iPad 10 is equipped with the A14 chip (from the iPhone 12), which is starting to show its age. To take advantage of AI, a minimum of an A17 chip and 8 GB of RAM (up from 4 GB currently) would be needed.

Given that Apple has recently equipped the iPad mini 7 with the Apple Pencil Pro, there’s no reason the iPad should miss out… However, this would mean that all iPads could use the Apple Pencil Pro, and the Pro designation might not mean much anymore, except to reserve some functions.

AirTags 2

Apple plans to launch an updated version of its AirTags in the first half of 2025. While the specifics of this new generation are not yet confirmed, it is likely to include a new UWB chip to enhance tracking accuracy and introduce new features.

In one of his Sunday newsletters, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg revisited the second-generation AirTags – codenamed B589 – which are expected to launch around mid next year. The latest reports suggest that Cupertino is finalizing various tests with subcontractors in Asia.

While the design might not change much, Apple would likely offer three significant improvements: greater range, a better chip, and enhanced privacy features. This last point likely refers to the numerous misuses of the tracker for harassment or vehicle theft. The challenge for Cupertino here is to balance the primary purpose of AirTags (finding a lost or stolen item) and preventing any misuse or invasion of privacy.

This new model would benefit from notable improvements in tracking and geolocation capabilities. It is expected to be equipped with the second-generation UWB chip, first introduced in the iPhone 15, which provides more precise tracking and can locate a compatible device up to three times further away (approximately 60 meters).

New Smart Home Products

Apple is expanding its smart home product line with the development of new devices expected in 2025. Among these, a smart home display featuring a six-inch screen, a camera for FaceTime calls, speakers, and AI-powered home controls. A launch is planned for March 2025.

Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on a home security camera and a smart doorbell with facial recognition to unlock doors. These launches demonstrate Apple’s commitment to strengthening its position in the consumer technology market by offering innovative and efficient products.
