Notification Summaries: A Temporary Goodbye
Following several errors and a complaint from the BBC in December (among others), Apple has temporarily suspended its notification summaries provided through Apple Intelligence. Summaries for apps in the News and Entertainment category have been temporarily disabled. However, they are set to return: they should be reinstated in an upcoming update (possibly with the final version of iOS 18.3 or later if necessary).
This suspension was previously announced by Cupertino. In a statement, Apple confirmed that a software update would be deployed in the coming weeks. It aims to better distinguish between summaries generated by Apple Intelligence and information directly from the media. An update will clarify when the displayed text is a summary provided by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report any issues if they encounter unexpected notifications.
As a reminder, the feature that aggregates and summarizes notifications from media apps had drawn criticism after the distribution of misleading summaries. Notably, some notifications incorrectly cited the BBC to claim that Luigi Mangione, involved in a murder, had committed suicide, and that Rafael Nadal had announced his homosexuality.
In the Settings app, the Notification Summaries
section clearly indicates that this is a beta feature and errors are a possibility (legal disclaimer). During setup, there is a new note indicating that the summary may alter the meaning of the original headlines. Double-check important information
.
In terms of formatting, summarized notifications are now displayed in italic text to distinguish them from standard notifications. Notification summaries can be disabled directly within each app from the lock screen by swiping a notification and pressing the Options
button.

Additional Modifications
In the Message menu bar (accessible by pressing the + button in any conversation), there is now an entry for Genmoji, which launches the dedicated creation interface. This is just another way to access the Genmoji creation tools, which were previously available by pressing the emoji keyboard button.
When editing a PDF through the screenshot interface, if you crop the content, Apple now provides a warning that the cropped content is not removed from the PDF. The content outside of the cropped area will not be visible in most PDF viewers, but it may be made visible in some applications
.
In the Settings app and on iPhone 16 models, Apple has changed the name of a Camera Control feature. The toggle for AE/AF lock is now called “Lock Focus and Exposure,” which should be clearer for novices who have no idea what AE/AF lock is. As a reminder, with this generation, you can lock the focus and exposure by lightly pressing and holding on the camera control button. This allows it to function similarly to a digital SLR camera.
