Netflix Ends Its Interactive Programming
On May 12, Netflix will remove the last two interactive titles it hosts: Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (released in 2018) and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend (released in 2020). This move effectively shuts down the chapter on this innovative format that the streaming giant began exploring in the late 2010s. These removals are part of a strategic shift towards mobile gaming and cloud gaming, a transition that began in 2023 with the cessation of interactive content production and the start of content removal.
End of a Technological Experiment
Upon its release, Bandersnatch was a game-changer: a film offering multiple scenarios impacted by viewer choices in real-time. As a psychological thriller with a meta-narrative, it was a groundbreaking experience on a streaming platform. Similarly, Kimmy vs. the Reverend offered a post-series interactive fun ride, especially entertaining for fans of Kimmy Schmidt, including myself. However, today, the technology behind these formats is considered too cumbersome. Netflix is abandoning them in favor of technologies that better fit its new model of cloud-based video games.
No Alternative Versions in Sight
Unlike the interactive episodes of Bear Grylls, which were recently reformatted into linear versions, Bandersnatch is deemed unadaptable due to its complex choices and branching paths. Thus, its removal also means its complete disappearance, with no physical media or alternative hosting in sight. While some fans hope for a “simplified” version, even its creators admit that the main appeal was the interactivity itself.
Challenging Preservation
This decision has not gone unnoticed among fans. Reddit has been buzzing, and preservation efforts like the “Netflix Interactive Archive” group on Discord have started to form. However, without access to Netflix’s servers and proprietary architecture, preserving these works as they are remains a challenge. For both nostalgic fans and new explorers, there are only a few days left to experience these unique interactive adventures.
