FromSoftware, the gaming studio behind the global hit Elden Ring, has announced that it is currently not planning a direct sequel to the game, opting instead to pursue different genres and new projects. This could be seen as quite a refreshing move.
No Immediate Plans for an Elden Ring Sequel
During the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 in Japan, Hidetaka Miyazaki, president of FromSoftware and director of Elden Ring, reported that the studio has no concrete plans for an Elden Ring 2. While he didn’t rule out the possibility of revisiting the game’s universe in the future, Miyazaki emphasized that current projects span multiple genres and do not include a direct sequel to the game. These remarks came after the June 2024 release of the expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, which was critically and commercially successful, clinching several awards, including the Grand Award at the ceremony.
New Projects in Development
FromSoftware is currently working on several new games, Miyazaki revealed, some led by him and others by different members of his team. The studio’s approach continues to prioritize innovation, aiming for fresh and varied experiences over focusing solely on sequels. This strategy has been evident in the past, notably after the success of Bloodborne, followed by Dark Souls III and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Available hints suggest these projects could include new game styles, and potentially a return to the Armored Core series.
The Success of Elden Ring and Fan Expectations
The success of Elden Ring and its expansion undoubtedly mirrors fan anticipation for a potential sequel. However, FromSoftware is known for defying expectations, and prefers to innovate rather than immediately capitalize on a successful franchise. This philosophy may well apply to the future of Elden Ring.
The Future of FromSoftware
The future of FromSoftware could also be shaped by strategic changes. Sony, which has expressed interest in acquiring Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware, may take a controlling stake in the studio. While it’s hard to predict the impact of this potential acquisition, it is hoped that Sony will ensure the creative independence that has elevated FromSoftware to one of the most respected studios in the gaming industry.
