Why Swap Your Battery When You Can Charge It? Nio’s Game-Changing Tech!

Nio is expanding its battery swapping stations across Europe, offering a quick, convenient, and cost-effective service that’s transforming electric mobility.

Europe’s Growing Network

Nio is strategically enhancing its presence in Europe by offering an ultra-flexible battery exchange service. Available in four countries (Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden), drivers can now switch from a standard 75 kWh battery to a 100 kWh long-range battery for a month or longer, depending on their needs. This is perfect for those who vary between short commutes and longer trips. In China, the switch can even be made for just a day, potentially eliminating the need for traditional charging altogether.

This model, already proven in China, is supported by a growing European network: 59 exchange stations are now operational across five countries, with the first Belgian station expected soon. In November, Nio achieved over 100,000 swaps in Europe, just 20 months after opening its first station in Lier, Norway.

Users can reserve a larger battery via the Nio app a day in advance. The swap takes just three minutes, similar to a conventional charging time. The result is a significant time saving and great flexibility for those who have a replacement station on their route or nearby.

Global Ambitions Driven by China

In China, Nio is not slowing down. In 2024, 424 new exchange stations were added, creating a dense network that covers 80.3% of users within a 3 km radius. In November alone, more than 2.3 million swaps were conducted, averaging an impressive 77,268 swaps per day.

Traditional charging methods are also expanding. With 389 new chargers installed in November, Nio now manages 24,358 charging points across 4,142 stations. And there’s more to come: a new factory in Wuhan and a headquarters dedicated to the Power division will further enhance these facilities.

With 20,575 vehicles delivered in November (5,082 of which were from its sub-brand Onvo), Nio continues to advance its vision of electric mobility. And with its partnership with Wanda Hotels & Resorts, the company is increasingly integrating EV infrastructure with environmental goals.
