XPeng Catches Up to Tesla: Dashcam, French Assistant, and Autonomous Driving Features!

Have you heard about XOS, XPENG’s system that really amazed us last year during our test drive of the XPENG G9?

Actually, I was so impressed by the quality of the system that I made a dedicated video and wrote an article to cover all its features, including a dual 15″ front display, AppleTV+ available during driving (passenger only), a 3D environmental display similar to Tesla’s, smartphone as a key… even the Germans aren’t this advanced!

XOS 5.4: XPeng Catches Up with Tesla!

With the release of XOS 5.4 through OTA (over-the-air updates, via 5G), the manufacturer is even catching up to Tesla.

This version is currently in beta-testing with many clients, including in France, to iron out any bugs. Who else does this in Europe? Even Tesla hasn’t gone this far yet.

Mainly, the new ‘AI Guard’ Sentinel mode is an AI-powered surveillance system that makes sure no one damages your precious vehicle or detects prolonged presence near the car. Notifications are sent directly to the XPENG app, keeping users informed of potential risks. This feature also doubles as a Dashcam (like Tesla) during drives, recording critical events (such as accidents) with secured storage of key footage. Again, the inspiration comes directly from Elon Musk, who has been doing this for years. However, it’s important to keep an eye on the electrical consumption, which is quite high in Tesla’s case (almost 1% of battery every 2 hours).

A Multilingual Voice Assistant, Autonomous Driving…

Another new feature, the voice assistant finally becomes multilingual and speaks French! Until now, it was only available in English.

Aside from regular functions (climate control, heated seats, GPS…), it can also detect the user’s position and close the correct window without needing to specify which one. We haven’t tested the French version yet, but it was quite effective in English.

Another update, autonomous driving now includes speed limit recognition, but it is also capable of identifying road signs like “No Entry” and highway exits. It might not have been the most reliable system we tested, but recent updates seem to have addressed many of the bugs we noted.

The update also includes split-screen multitasking and greater flexibility for customizing the infotainment layouts through the XDock system. The new X-Combo feature allows users to automate recurring onboard tasks, such as activating child safety locks when switching to drive mode, simplifying daily routines.

Charging visuals have been enhanced with an animation inspired by the aurora borealis, presenting charging speeds more clearly. Additionally, the updates to the display of the driving range are now aligned with the WLTP standard, which will reassure customers.

Many other features have been introduced or optimized with XOS 5.4, following initial feedback from French clients:

Scheduled charging start time to take advantage of off-peak hours
Improved 3D rendering of the car’s environment (e.g., brake lights and door openings of nearby cars).
Cable streaming mode to display external content on the dashboard screen: handheld gaming consoles, computers, tablets, etc.
Accelerated automatic parking
“Multitasking” and hand gestures
Direct and remote management of battery pre-heating via the XPENG app
Management of the tow bar (deployment and storage) via the XPENG app
Smoother transition out of semi-autonomous drive mode via action on the steering wheel
Improved acceleration during automated overtaking phases
