Following its transition to a credit card-sized format, the French identity card has taken another significant step: digitalization. You can now store it directly on your iPhone. Here’s how to do it.

A Fresh New Format
I was delighted when the cumbersome old ID card was replaced by a much more convenient credit card-sized format. Many wallets are available, but they weren’t compatible with the old ID card, severely limiting options. However, this new card is more than just a redesign: it includes an NFC chip, paving the way for the Electronic National Identity Card (CNIe).
Thanks to this new identity card and the France Identité app, you can now store your card directly on your iPhone. There’s no need to carry the physical card as long as you have your phone with you.
Free Renewal
Until recently, you could only renew your identity card for free under certain conditions: if it was expired, damaged, or if there was a change in civil status or residence. Now, the ANTS website allows you to request an early replacement of your old card for free, even if it is still valid.
To do this, simply go to the ANTS website and make a pre-request online. Once logged in, click on Identity Card and/or Passport, choose whether it’s for a minor or an adult, and start the process by answering the various questions. The key is to select ‘Identity Card only’ as the reason for the pre-request, otherwise your application will not proceed. As for the reason, you must select Renewal for digital identity

Be aware: appointment wait times can be long depending on the municipality. Your request for early renewal will not be prioritized over a first-time application or an expired card. Once you have made your pre-request online, you will need to schedule an appointment at the city hall, bringing the required documents and a conforming ID photo.
Once you receive your new identity card, download the France Identité app on your iPhone. Then simply follow the steps to create your digital identity: scan your card via NFC, choose a personal 6-digit code… and you’re all set.
Your digital identity card can then replace the physical version, especially during checks on SNCF trains. The app will also allow you to prove your identity to third parties, or generate a secure identity proof.
