Hostage Crisis at an Apple Store
The event is real. On February 22, 2022, an armed man entered the Apple Store on Leidseplein Square in Amsterdam. He took a customer hostage for over five hours, demanding $230 million in cryptocurrency. As the police surrounded the building, around a hundred people—both customers and employees—were trapped inside for the duration.
The assailant threatened to detonate explosives he claimed to have on him. He fired at law enforcement and escalated the emergency services’ response to a high-stakes situation. However, the standoff ended abruptly: the hostage managed to escape, and as the armed man chased after him, he was struck by a police vehicle. He later died from his injuries at the hospital.
iHostage: A Drama Perfect for Netflix
iHostage doesn’t follow a straightforward narrative, but instead presents multiple perspectives—a technique quite popular today: that of the attacker, the hostages—including a Bulgarian national—and the response teams. This immersive approach offers a psychological reexamination of the event, blending thriller and human drama elements.
The setting of the action in an Apple Store—a place usually linked with technology, design, and tranquil shopping—adds a unique twist to the film. Subtly, iHostage raises questions about the unpredictable dangers in our familiar spaces.
The screenplay is penned by Simon de Waal, with Horizon Film handling the production. The film also represents a strategic move for Netflix, which is increasingly investing in true stories with a global appeal. Only four more days to go until its release!
