As Apple struggles to keep pace with the incredible advancements of competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic, the tech giant has strategically hired Kim Vorrath, a seasoned veteran of the company. Vorrath will now be a key player in Apple’s artificial intelligence and machine learning division, led by John Giannandrea.

The appointment of Kim Vorrath is far from arbitrary. She has been instrumental in the development of major projects, bringing her expertise in project management and turning around struggling products.
According to Bloomberg, Kim Vorrath will take over program management within Apple’s AI division. She will oversee Kelsey Peterson, who previously held the position, as well as Cindy Lin and Marc Schonbrun, two key executives within the team.
Her mission? To inject new energy into Apple’s artificial intelligence efforts and Siri, which have been criticized for their slow evolution compared to competitors like ChatGPT and Claude.
Does Siri Have a Future?
Indeed, despite promising announcements, Cupertino’s advancements in AI have yet to fully impress. The recent deactivation of notification summaries in iOS 18.3 is a prime example. This setback highlights the challenges the California-based company faces in integrating AI: maintaining impeccable accuracy while ensuring a seamless and reliable user experience.
Apple introduced an AI-enhanced version of Siri in June 2024, promising new features and more natural interactions. However, this version of Siri has not yet been rolled out, and it has not been part of an iOS 18 beta (there are high hopes for iOS 18.4). But this delay underscores the technical and organizational challenges Apple faces in realizing its AI ambitions.

While many companies are working to redefine the future of generative AI, Cupertino is still behind in offering functional solutions to the general public. Therefore, it needs to quickly accelerate its initiatives to stay in the race, even though it champions an integrated and secure approach, capitalizing on its hardware and software ecosystem.
With Kim Vorrath at the helm, Apple appears to be working on a new strategy in development. It remains to be seen if these efforts will be enough to bridge the gap with its competitors and reposition Siri as a major player in the artificial intelligence landscape.
