Baldur’s Gate 3: A Unique Video Game Whose Success Disrupted Its Development

A Phenomenal Success

The Baldur’s Gate series has always been highly regarded, stemming from the rich universe of Dungeons & Dragons. The first two titles, created by the legendary studio BioWare, set a high bar. Larian Studios, known for their acclaimed Divinity: Original Sin games, took on the monumental task of continuing the saga, which hadn’t seen a new release since 2004.

The result was a resounding success. Baldur’s Gate III was celebrated for its intricate storytelling, vast array of narrative paths, and rich gameplay possibilities. The game received rave reviews, boasting a 96% average on Metacritic and an impressive 19/20 from some reviewers. It sold over fifteen million copies and won numerous awards, which presented an unexpected challenge.

Baldur’s Gate III didn’t just win awards; it dominated the awards season. It won six Game Awards, including Game of the Year, seven Golden Joystick Awards, and accolades from the GDC Awards, the British Academy Games Awards, and the DICE Awards. Remarkably, it won the top honor at each of these ceremonies, becoming the first game to achieve such a feat.

However, success came with logistical challenges. Accepting these awards required Larian’s team to travel extensively, which disrupted the game’s ongoing development. Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian and director of Baldur’s Gate 3, spoke about this issue in an interview with Edge:

“It affects development when there are many awards. It’s a real problem. Different people had to attend different award ceremonies. While it’s great to have moments of celebration and we appreciate the recognition, it would have been fantastic if we could manage everything at the same time. It’s surprisingly exhausting for the soul, and we were all very emotional because we couldn’t bring closure to the project as we wanted to.”

Despite the exhaustion, the success of Baldur’s Gate III is well-deserved, reflecting the tremendous effort and passion Larian Studios put into creating this masterpiece.
