As a reminder, the latest iteration of Beats’ Bluetooth speaker, the Pill+, was launched in 2015 and then discontinued in 2022, only to reappear occasionally through collaborations such as with clothing brand Stüssy and Book Projects, the company of NBA star Devin Booker. Beats took its time before unveiling this completely revamped 2024 version. For its launch, Beats even brought back a fictional character to promote the new speaker!

With the new Pill 2024, the manufacturer introduces a new ‘racetrack’ shaped speaker (oval-shaped reminiscent of American racetracks) with a reinforced diaphragm and a larger magnet, which, according to Beats, delivers significantly better sound and allows for high-volume play with reduced distortion (the woofer moves 90% more air than the previous generation, eliminating the need for a passive radiator), along with a new tweeter. This setup results in a monophonic output, but it’s possible to pair two Beats Pills for stereo sound (a ‘Double Mono Amplification’ mode is also available once the speakers are paired).

The speaker features a USB-C port for charging that can also be used to charge other devices and to enjoy lossless wired audio (wired stereo pairing is not available). The speakers are slightly angled to improve positioning relative to the listener, and the device is certified IP67, making it safe to bring along to the beach or pool.

The Beats Pill 2024, which we have reviewed, includes a microphone for calls and voice assistants, Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC and AAC codecs, connects easily to both Apple and Android devices, and supports location services from both ecosystems, features buttons for various controls as well as a strap, and offers up to 24 hours of battery life.
