The Pixel 9a has joined the Pixel 9 series as the most budget-friendly model, priced at $549 for the 128GB version and $609 for the 256GB version. Its design has evolved from the previous horizontal camera bar to a more subtle camera island positioned at the top left on the back of the phone.

A Slightly Larger Display
The device has increased in size, measuring 154.7 x 73.3 x 8.9 mm, primarily to accommodate a 6.3-inch OLED screen, up from 6.1 inches in its predecessor. This Full HD+ (1080 x 2424 pixels) panel features an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 60 to 120 Hz and boasts a brightness of 2700 nits, which is 35% brighter than the Pixel 8a. The screen protection is provided by Gorilla Glass 3, which is slightly less advanced than newer generations.
The Pixel 9a also improves in durability with an IP68 certification, upgraded from IP67, offering better protection against water and dust.
Enhanced Battery Life and Comparable Performance to Higher Models
Like other smartphones in the Pixel 9 series, the Pixel 9a is powered by the Google Tensor G4 processor paired with 8GB of RAM. Internal storage options remain the same, available in 128GB or 256GB, with no option for expansion via microSD card.
The battery life, a point of criticism for the Pixel 8a, has been improved with a 5100 mAh battery, up from 4492 mAh previously. Google claims over 30 hours of usage, a significant increase from the previous model. A power-saving mode can extend battery life up to 100 hours. Wired charging is limited to 23W, and the smartphone does not include a charger in the box. Wireless charging is still available but capped at 7.5W, which is below the standards for competitors in this price range.
In terms of connectivity, the Pixel 9a supports Wi-Fi 6E and 5G but lacks Wi-Fi 7, which is available on the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro models.
Photography Improvements Despite Resolution Reduction
The Pixel 9a focuses on artificial intelligence to enhance photography. Its main camera module features a 48 MP (f/1.7) sensor with optical stabilization, replacing the 64 MP of the Pixel 8a. This decrease in resolution is offset by advanced software processing and a larger aperture, designed to capture more light. The ultra-wide angle remains a 13 MP (f/2.2), similar to last year’s.
Several software features are integrated, including Night Sight for low-light shots, Astrophotography, Face Unblur, and Magic Eraser for post-capture image editing. The feature Add Me
, already available on other Pixels, automatically includes the photographer in a group photo. In terms of video, the Pixel 9a supports 4K at 60 frames per second on its main sensor, as well as 8x Super Res zoom assisted by AI.
Software and 7-Year Update Commitment
The Pixel 9a runs on Android 15 and comes with a 7-year software support plan, including security updates and enhancements through Pixel Feature Drops. It also incorporates Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, which is gradually replacing Google Assistant. The device includes several AI-based tools, notably for screening unwanted calls, Circle to Search, and newly launched anti-theft protections by Google.

How Does It Compare to the iPhone 16e?
By comparison, the recently launched iPhone 16e, priced at 719 euros, stands as a notable alternative to the Pixel 9a. However, despite a slightly higher price, the iPhone 16e has some limitations. Its 6.1-inch OLED display offers a 60 Hz refresh rate, lower than the 120 Hz adaptive rate of the Pixel 9a. Moreover, the iPhone 16e features just a single 48 MP rear camera without an ultra-wide lens, unlike the dual module of the Pixel 9a that includes a 13 MP ultra-wide angle. The Pixel 9a offers a more versatile photography experience and smoother display at a more affordable price.
