The concept of a strip for the camera block on the back of the iPhone 17 has been floating around the internet for some time – with various design renders circulating. It all began last December when the leaker Digital Chat Station sparked the initial rumor.
Since then, others have joined the fray, with Majin Bu sharing CAD files he claims came from Jon Prosser’s sources. Then, Sonny Dickson released renderings of cases confirming the camera strip, before unveiling his own CAD files, lending even more credibility to this possible design shift.
Although top analysts like Mark Gurman have yet to comment on this design change, Ming-Chi Kuo hinted at an “ultra-thin iPhone measuring 6.6 mm.”
Why Opt for a Strip Design?
This design choice might address multiple technical constraints. It would free up space in the casing, allowing for more room to incorporate advanced camera sensors and thinner batteries – features that are always in high demand.
Looking at the current iPhone 16 Pro, one notices that the camera bump already extends well beyond the midpoint of the phone’s back. A unified strip could thus offer both an aesthetic and functional solution (hopefully with a design more refined than the current renders circulating online).
The challenge will be to ensure that this new feature maintains a visual identity unique to Apple, avoiding the impression of following the trend set by Google with its iconic Pixel camera bar.
What We Know About the iPhone 17
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 lineup in September 2025. According to the latest and most innovative leaks, the iPhone Plus might be replaced by a lighter and more compact iPhone 17 Slim or Air (albeit at the expense of photo capabilities and battery life). The iPhone 17 Pro Max could feature 12 GB of RAM—a first for Apple, likely in a bid to boost Apple Intelligence’s capabilities. There’s also talk of reverse charging or 35 W charging.
So, will the camera strip be the major design revolution of the iPhone 17? We’ll have to wait a few more months to find out, but the leaks are increasingly pointing in that direction.
