Copilot on Mac: An All-in-One AI
Previously, Mac users had to access Copilot through Microsoft’s website. However, as of this Thursday, the Copilot app can now be downloaded for free from the Mac App Store. To use it, you’ll need a Mac with an M1 chip or newer and macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
Availability is currently limited to certain continents, but a broader rollout seems to be on the horizon.
It’s worth noting that Copilot is a versatile chatbot powered by several advanced language models, including ChatGPT-4 (a collaboration between Microsoft and OpenAI, bolstered by significant investment from Redmond), DALL-E 3 (for image creation), Codex (for coding and code analysis), and Prometheus (Microsoft’s internal model).
With these tools, Copilot can perform a wide array of everyday tasks, such as answering complex questions, generating visual or textual content, refining documents, and even assisting with daily chores like planning a trip, organizing a recipe, or finding store hours.
Microsoft highlights the versatility of its assistant, which can serve as an alternative to traditional search engines for more direct and detailed responses.
What About Apple Intelligence?
The introduction of Copilot on Mac comes at a crucial time: Apple is currently developing its own AI initiative dubbed Apple Intelligence. While Apple has been tight-lipped about its progress, the inclusion of Copilot in the macOS ecosystem is putting pressure on the Cupertino-based company to deliver an AI that is just as effective and seamlessly integrated into its devices.
An urban legend suggests that Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, tried out Copilot during the holiday season of 2022, which reportedly convinced him that Apple needed to accelerate its AI efforts. Nonetheless, he continues to stand by Siri, which increasingly seems outdated.
