We’ve just wrapped up our review of the iPhone 16, but the buzz for the iPhone 17 is already picking up steam. It looks like Apple’s 2025 lineup might feature some exciting upgrades to the display, according to a well-respected industry analyst.
Ross Young, a notable name in tech analysis, recently hinted via 9to5Mac that Apple plans to equip the more budget-friendly iPhone 17 models with the same always-on display and ProMotion technology previously reserved for the more premium Pro and Pro Max versions.
This upgrade would involve the integration of LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) technology, which is essential for reducing power consumption while supporting a dynamic refresh rate that adjusts anywhere between 1Hz to 120Hz as needed.
Initially, Young also speculated that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max might feature an under-display Face ID, but he later retracted that statement, clarifying it was a misunderstanding. So, it seems we might have to wait a bit longer for that particular innovation.
Leveling the Playing Field: Pro vs. Non-Pro
Should the standard iPhone 17 models receive the LTPO screen tech next year, the gap between these and the higher-end Pro and Pro Max models might shrink. Nonetheless, the latter are likely to still boast superior cameras and more powerful processors.
There’s also a buzz about a potential shake-up in the iPhone lineup. Rumors suggest that instead of a new ‘Plus’ model, we might see an iPhone 17 Air—offering a sleeker design at the same price tag. Apple has a history of using the ‘Air’ branding with other products like the iPad Air and MacBook Air, so this wouldn’t be completely out of left field, but confirmation is still nearly a year away.
And the iPhone 17 rumors don’t stop there. There’s also chatter about enhancements to the selfie cameras and an increase in RAM, alongside the expected improvements in overall performance.
