Just as the iPhone 16 is beginning to carve out its niche in the market, Apple appears to be gearing up for its next iteration. Unlike the iPhone SE, which updates every 2-3 years, Apple seems to be setting a course for annual refreshes. According to the leaker Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo, the iPhone 17 is nearly entering the test production phase, indicating a planned launch for 2026.

Accelerated Schedule for the iPhone 17?
The leaker mentioned that “the transformation of the production line for the 17th iteration has been scheduled” and that “the model is almost at the trial production stage.” This somewhat vague statement might suggest that Apple is keen on testing its next-gen entry-level iPhone much earlier in the cycle.
This move to an annual update may come as a surprise since the iPhone 16 was only officially announced in February 2025. At that time, Tim Cook introduced it as “the new member of the family,” which might hint that an annual update could become standard for this more affordable model.
Typically, trial production starts between six and nine months before a product’s commercial release. Following this timeline, beginning production in mid-2025 would likely lead to a launch in early 2026, around the same time as the iPhone 16’s debut.
Fixed Focus Digital suggests a release by May 2026 at the latest, but it would make more sense for it to happen around March. It would be unusual for Apple to let ready units sit idle on assembly lines for several months.
Fixed Focus Digital is not a new name in the realm of Apple leaks. Though his track record is mixed, he was the first to suggest that the iPhone SE 4 would be renamed iPhone 16—a bold but eventually confirmed prediction. This lends some credibility to his latest claims.
A Model of Success Despite Compromises
Introduced as a budget-friendly iPhone, which we reviewed thoroughly, the iPhone 16 received a generally positive reception despite its higher price and some controversial technical changes, such as the absence of MagSafe. Nevertheless, it remains a very recent iPhone, more affordable than other models, and will be compatible with Apple Intelligence once fully available.
Ultimately, it has allowed Apple to dominate certain markets or appeal to customers wanting the latest iPhone at the lowest price, without demanding too much else. The challenge for the iPhone 17 will be to sustain this product line while addressing some deficiencies that may have disappointed the more demanding users.
