Government Set to Reclassify X as an Adult Site
France is considering reclassifying the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, as a pornographic site. The main concern is the increasing presence of explicit content on the platform, which has been officially permitted since 2024. This potential reclassification would subject X to the same regulations as adult sites like YouPorn or Pornhub, including mandatory age verification for users. Clara Chappaz, the Digital Affairs Minister, confirms that her team is seriously examining this option.
A Shifting Regulatory Framework
This proposal does not come out of nowhere but emerges in a context of tightening regulations concerning the protection of minors online. Since June 7, pornography websites must verify the age of their viewers to remain accessible in France. Several, including Pornhub and Redtube, have suspended their services in the country in protest of this requirement. The government, on its part, stands by this policy, believing it helps limit young people’s exposure to violent or degrading content.
What About X?
Elon Musk’s social network might soon have to choose: ban pornographic content or implement a stringent age verification system. This would be a significant shift for a platform that has positioned itself as a bastion of free speech following its recent changes under Musk’s leadership. Interestingly, the French government is following in the footsteps of Tanzania, which recently blocked X for similar reasons. Minister Chappaz summed up the situation by stating that X would face the same constraints as YouPorn.
Questions About Freedom of Expression
This approach, however, raises questions about the boundary between regulation and censorship. Some criticize it as a political manipulation of child protection to expand restrictions on online content. The example of Belgium, where the broadcasting authority identified nearly 5,000 pornographic accounts on X, shows that this issue extends beyond French borders. By reclassifying X, France might set a complex legal precedent at a time when digital freedom tensions are increasingly pronounced. VPNs, indeed, have a bright future ahead.

The irony in this situation is that, following the exodus and departure of many users from X, frustrated by Elon Musk’s stances, the most loyal users of the platform are precisely politicians – particularly those on the right – who are the first to stand against pornography.
