John Malkovich Joins Apple TV+’s New Series on Prodigies: Is It America’s Answer to HPI?

Apple TV+ continues to draw big names to its original productions. The iconic actor John Malkovich (Burn After Reading, Rounders) has been confirmed to join the cast of Prodigies, a new seven-episode comedy series. He will be starring alongside Ayo Edebiri (The Bear, Inside Out 2), who is also an executive producer on the project.

A Romantic Comedy… With a Twist

First announced in April, Prodigies is a creation by Will Sharpe (The White Lotus, A Real Pain), who also plays one of the lead roles. The series deliberately steps away from the typical romantic comedy formula. Apple describes Prodigies as an exploration of the universal complexities of long-term relationships through an unconventional couple, blending humor, tenderness, and existential questioning.

The story follows Didi (Edebiri) and Ren (Sharpe), two former child prodigies who have been a couple since their youth. Now in their thirties, they begin to question whether their ordinary lives have lived up to the extraordinary promises of their youth. By questioning their individual aspirations and their relationship, the series challenges the myth that a love story ends when the protagonists come together. Instead, it’s just the beginning.

An Already Impressive Cast

John Malkovich’s addition brings a heavyweight of film and television to an already robust cast. The series will also feature Tobias Menzies (F1: The Movie, The Crown), Sophia Di Martino (Loki), and Andrene Ward-Hammond (Your Honor), among others.

The role of John Malkovich has yet to be revealed, but his presence suggests we can expect some particularly memorable scenes, given the actor’s renowned ability to portray complex, eccentric, or unpredictable characters.

Growing Anticipation

As of now, no official release date has been announced. However, given the prestige of the creative team and cast, Prodigies is shaping up to be one of the most promising upcoming Apple TV+ projects.

With its subtle writing and fresh angle on revisiting the romantic comedy genre, Apple could attract an audience looking for more nuanced narratives about couple life. And with John Malkovich on board, the series gains an additional edge to make a lasting impression.

And recently, Apple TV+ has had a record year as the Television Academy just announced the nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. It is notably led by Severance, which alone amasses 27 nominations, more than any other series this season. And this year, the company goes in with a whopping 81 nominations across all content!
