Threads Continues Its Rapid Growth
Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that Threads, which he hopes will directly compete with X, now boasts 400 million monthly active users (a standard metric for measuring social network audience). This number represents a surge of 50 million users since April 2025, up from 350 million users, and an increase from 320 million in the first quarter.
If this trend continues, Meta could surpass 100 million new sign-ups in a single year, a rate that could soon bring Threads close to X, which reportedly has around 600 million users according to unverifiable figures released by its former management.
Ongoing Improvements to Attract Users
In recent months, Threads has rolled out numerous updates: an independent internal messaging system separate from Instagram, support for spoiler tags… These enhancements, when added together, indicate that Meta is finally adjusting its roadmap based on user feedback, while aiming to attract those who might switch from X.
The platform is also preparing for a governance shift: starting next month, Connor Hayes will take over the day-to-day management of the app, while still under the oversight of Adam Mosseri. This change could influence Threads’ strategy and growth rate in the upcoming months.
By now granting more autonomy to Threads under Connor Hayes’ leadership, Meta appears to be striving to carve out a clearer identity and address the functional gaps that still hinder its progress. Nevertheless, the challenge remains formidable: X continues to hold a core user base for real-time news, and Meta must demonstrate that Threads can be more than just an extension of Instagram.
