Malaga also played a significant role in the series, doubling as the fictional Heraklion. Production teams transformed the city’s Parras Street with elaborate murals depicting Poseidon and other mythological figures, though these murals were quickly removed after filming wrapped in July 2021. Other notable spots in Malaga include the promenade of Pablo Ruiz Picasso and the El Ingenio shopping center in Vélez-Málaga, which provided the setting for several supermarket scenes.
Almería, Spain
Almería’s stunning coastlines and historical landmarks provided a natural fit for the epic atmosphere of Kaos. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park, known for its rugged beauty, features prominently in many scenes, offering an authentic Mediterranean look. The Playa de Torre Garcia beach and the Ermita de Torregarcía church were used to create Hera’s chapel, while scenes set in a cave were filmed at the old Alfaro restaurant in Tabernas—a location previously featured in Black Mirror.
Madrid and Valencia, Spain
The series shifted to Madrid for the latter half of filming. Here, the grand Villalís Palace, a luxurious estate boasting nine bedrooms and fourteen bathrooms, became the lavish manor of Zeus and Hera. This location has a history of being used in film and television due to its opulent design.
Valencia also played a key role in the production, especially for scenes set in the Underworld. The Sant Miquel dels Reis monastery stood in as a temple for Hera, its facade enhanced with digital effects to create the ancient ambiance. The Cheste educational complex, with its striking brutalist architecture, provided a fittingly stark backdrop for black-and-white scenes representing the Underworld’s eerie landscapes.
Italy: Capturing the Majesty of Olympus
While most of Kaos was filmed in Spain, some pivotal scenes set at Mount Olympus were captured in Italy. The idyllic gardens and the iconic Neptune Fountain seen in the show belong to the Villa d’Este in Tivoli, near Rome. This UNESCO World Heritage site, dating back to the 16th century, added an authentic Renaissance touch to the series.
