Two Significant Departures from Apple
These are Mark Lee and Tom Gunter, two seasoned executives who were directly reporting to Ruoming Pang. They will also be moving to Meta Superintelligence Labs, Menlo Park’s new division tasked with developing advanced artificial intelligence systems that aim to match or exceed human capabilities.
According to Bloomberg, Mark Lee was actually the first hire Ruoming Pang made after he took charge of the Foundation Models team at Apple, while the latter is one of its most seasoned members. These consecutive departures continue to weaken the team responsible for the core models of Apple Intelligence features, such as email summaries, priority notifications, or the popular Genmoji.
Bloomberg emphasizes that these serial departures highlight the ongoing turmoil within Apple’s Foundation Models team, which is in a critical phase as the company aims to reposition Apple Intelligence at the heart of its products. Already struggling with delays, this team might become even more destabilized.
Meta Puts Pressure on Apple with Record Salaries
In order to attract these experts, Meta has not hesitated to open its wallet: Ruoming Pang reportedly accepted an offer that amounts to around 200 million dollars, spread over several years. Apple has tried to respond by offering raises to its engineers, but the salaries Meta offers remain substantially higher, increasing internal tensions.
Facing these challenges, Apple is now considering a major strategic shift: instead of relying solely on its own models, the tech giant is testing alternatives based on partnerships with third parties like OpenAI or Anthropic. It has even considered acquiring existing companies, like Mistral!
According to Bloomberg, Apple is currently developing two parallel versions of Apple Intelligence, one using its internal models and another utilizing external technologies, without having yet decided which will form the basis for Siri and Apple Intelligence services starting in 2026.
