Climate scientist Maximiliano Herrera, known for tracking global temperature trends, took to social media to sound the alarm: “In three centuries of climate history, nothing compares to what is happening in Asia right now,” Herrera said. He went on to explain that tens of thousands of temperature records were being broken across the continent, some by staggering margins. This, he believes, marks the “most extreme event ever observed.”

Stifling Nights and Growing Concerns

The relentless heat isn’t just affecting daytime temperatures—it’s making nighttime unbearable as well. In Basra, Iraq’s second-largest city, the temperature peaked at a scorching 46.1°C on April 26. Meanwhile, Zabol in Iran saw 44.7°C—just a glimpse of the intense conditions gripping the northern parts of the region.

Since mid-April, India and Pakistan have been experiencing what ClimaMeter, a collaborative platform from the Pierre-Simon Laplace Institute in Paris, describes as an “early and unusual” heatwave. The intensity of these conditions is unprecedented for this time of year, exacerbating the situation for millions who rely on the arrival of the cooler months to recover from summer-like conditions.

As the sun sets, residents face suffocating nights with little relief. With increased water and electricity consumption during the day, the region is also facing the very real possibility of shortages.
