New Apple AirTags 2 On the Horizon: What to Expect!

Launched in April 2021, the AirTag may finally see a second version, expected to be released around the middle of next year.

AirTags 2 Coming in 2025!

In his latest newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is emphatic: the second generation of AirTag, codenamed B589, is set to launch around the middle of next year. Currently, Apple is undergoing various manufacturing tests with subcontractors in Asia.

The forecast for 2025:

– 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air with M4 chip (J613 and J615)
– Updated iPhone SE
– Refreshed 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air (J607 and J637)
– New Magic Keyboards for the updated iPad Air range (R307 and R308)
– An enhanced AirTag (B589).

What to Expect from AirTags 2?

While the design will remain quite similar, Apple plans to introduce three main improvements: better range, an enhanced chip, and strengthened privacy measures. The latter point likely addresses the numerous instances where AirTags have been misused for harassment or vehicle theft. Apple’s challenge here is to balance the primary purpose of AirTags (to locate lost or stolen items) while preventing any misuse or privacy invasions.

Additionally, this new model will feature significant upgrades in tracking and geolocation capabilities. It is expected to include the second-generation UWB chip, first introduced in the iPhone 15, which provides even more precise tracking and can locate a compatible device up to three times further away than before (about 60 meters).

Last year, Ming-Chi Kuo also weighed in on the topic. According to him, the production of AirTag 2 had been pushed from the fourth quarter of 2024 to 2025 (without further details).

However, he seemed certain of one thing: the AirTag 2 would be part of a new ecosystem built around the Vision Pro, which would act as a central hub incorporating other satellite devices. In this setup, the Ultra Wideband chip in the AirTag could be used to relay location information to the Vision Pro to a certain extent.

Thieves Will Hate This Feature

Last week, Apple revealed details about a new AirTags feature. The Find My app already allows users to share their items with trusted individuals so that they can also track them.

In the beta 2 of iOS 18.2, the Find My app includes a new option to share the location of an item with a trusted person to help recover it more quickly. This feature will soon be available to all users as a free software update starting from the iPhone X.
