Nintendo to Allow Digital Game Sharing! What Are the Conditions?

In a recent announcement, Nintendo unveiled a new feature that marks a significant shift in its approach to game sharing. Along with the launch of a new app, the Japanese gaming giant has introduced a lending feature for the digital versions of its games, a first for the company which has traditionally tied game ownership to user accounts.

Digital Lending with Strict Rules

Slated for release at the end of April, this system will allow players to temporarily lend a game to a member of their Nintendo family group for up to 14 days. Previously, only physical cartridge games could be easily shared or lent among friends and family. This new feature will be available on the current Nintendo Switch as well as its upcoming successor, the Switch 2, with more details to be revealed next week.

This update gives digital format games similar flexibility, albeit within strictly defined limits:

Lending period capped at 14 days with no extension possible;
• Exclusively available to accounts within the family group, with a maximum of 8 people;
• The game cannot be played simultaneously on two different accounts during the lending period.

A Shift in a Predominantly Digital Market

The launch of this feature comes in a time when the video game industry is increasingly moving towards digital distribution. According to the latest data from Newzoo, less than 5% of the industry’s revenue now comes from physical game sales, with digital platforms accounting for nearly all sales.

With this new lending system, Nintendo aims to adapt to current user practices while maintaining strict control over the distribution of digitally purchased content.

A Busy Time for Nintendo: Switch 2, Metroid Prime 4, and Pokémon Z-A

This announcement is part of a busy week for Nintendo. Alongside this new feature, the company released new images of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, expected by the end of 2025, and the upcoming installment in the Pokémon series, Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Nintendo also introduced its new mobile app, Nintendo Today!, which will feature news, announcements, and thematic content related to its iconic franchises.

This sets the stage for next week, with a new video focused on the Switch 2 set to air on Wednesday, followed by a global demo tour kicking off in major cities including Paris, New York, and Tokyo starting April 4. This evolution in Nintendo’s ecosystem has been anticipated by users eager for the gaming giant to modernize its digital approach without completely overhauling its distribution model.
