Extended Wait Despite AirPods Pro’s Popularity
Indeed, the analyst has quite clearly stated that he does not expect any significant updates to the AirPods lineup in 2025. While his statement broadly covers the entire range, he also mentioned that the next iteration of the AirPods Pro—expected to include infrared sensors—would not make its debut until 2026.
This stance contradicts several recent reports suggesting the arrival of a third generation before next year, with enhancements such as improved active noise cancellation and a heart rate sensor.
AirPods Max to Be Neglected Even Longer
And for AirPods Max users, the outlook is even more uncertain. Following the minor update in 2024 (a port change and new colors), expectations from users are high.
But according to Ming-Chi Kuo, no updates are planned before 2027, which will be more than six years since the initial launch of the headphones. This lack of progress may seem surprising in a premium segment, especially as competitors continue to roll out technical upgrades.

No New Models, But New Features!
There’s a silver lining, however. Apple continues to enhance the features of its AirPods Pro 2 through software updates. The model released in 2022 now supports a hearing aid function, helping to correct mild to moderate hearing loss. The products maintain their relevance over time, even without yearly renewals (so much for obsolescence…).
Moreover, the AirPods 4, launched in the fall of 2024, include some features previously exclusive to the Pro models, such as active noise cancellation, while being priced more aggressively. This upgrade in standard models could partly explain Apple’s decision to slow down the AirPods Pro cycle, although it may also make the product lineup less clear for users.
However, it’s hoped that Apple will continue to innovate in the earphone segment, which it has dominated in recent years. Indeed, the numbers speak for themselves: wearables have been losing momentum in recent quarters due to a lack of innovation!
