An AI That Acts on Your Behalf
In Silicon Valley, there’s a new arms race: “AI agents.” No longer are we talking about mere chatbots that answer questions, but rather artificial intelligences that can take action. ChatGPT Agent represents OpenAI’s first foray into this area.
In practical terms, you can ask it in natural language to carry out a complex task like “plan a weekend in Rome by comparing flights and hotels,” and the AI will take over a virtual browser to fulfill the request, complete forms, etc.
Early User Feedback Is Concerning
While the promise might remind you of Iron Man’s JARVIS, the reality seems to still be a ways off. Initial user feedback on platforms like Reddit is sometimes troubling. The risks of the AI messing up your computer are real, and early adopters might experience some problematic bugs.
OpenAI Promises Safeguards
In response to these risks, OpenAI has implemented safety measures. The agent is required to ask for permission before taking any significant actions (like sending an email or making a booking), and financial transactions are currently blocked.
This feature is being rolled out to paying subscribers of ChatGPT, but it has not yet been launched in France, where no release date has been announced.
What’s the Verdict?
The emergence of AI agents is a logical but slightly scary step. OpenAI, with its strategy of “launch first, fix later,” is using its customers as beta testers for technology that is clearly not yet perfected and could be hazardous.
This approach is in stark contrast to Apple’s. It’s hard to imagine Apple launching a feature like “Apple Intelligence” that might accidentally delete a user’s files. Apple’s sometimes criticized caution here makes a lot of sense. Perhaps it’s better to have an AI that’s a bit less “magical” but doesn’t risk wiping out your work. Would you be willing to let an AI take control of your computer?
