Sony Pulls Concord From Sale and Issues Refunds Just Two Weeks After Launch

Multiplayer fans were introduced to Concord, Sony’s newest PlayStation 5 and PC exclusive, just two weeks ago. However, what was meant to be a promising new addition to the hero-shooter genre turned into one of the biggest commercial failures in recent memory. Citing unexpectedly low player engagement, Sony has now made the drastic decision to shut down Concord’s servers and offer full refunds to all buyers.

A Disastrous Debut

Sony had high hopes for Concord, aiming for it to carve out a niche among established giants like Overwatch and Valorant. The game, launched on August 23, boasted strategic gameplay and an evolving sci-fi universe that was meant to captivate players over time. Critics even found merit in the game’s mechanics, with some publications rating it as high as 16/20.

However, the numbers told a different story. Steam’s player statistics were alarming from day one, with peak concurrent users never surpassing 700 players—a catastrophic figure for an online multiplayer game. As reports surfaced that Concord had only sold 10,000 copies on Steam and 15,000 on PlayStation 5, it became clear that the game was not gaining traction. With figures that low, sustaining an active and engaged community would be nearly impossible.

Sony Shuts Down Servers and Initiates Refunds

Following weeks of speculation, Sony confirmed that Concord’s servers will officially close on September 6. In a public statement, the company acknowledged that while aspects of the game resonated with some players, the overall response was far from what they had hoped for.

“Dear Concord fans, we have listened closely to your feedback since launch and deeply appreciate everyone who joined us on this journey. While some elements of the experience connected with players, we recognize that certain aspects and our initial rollout did not meet expectations. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to shut down servers on September 6, 2024, while we explore alternative strategies to bring Concord back in a form that better engages players.”

As part of this process, Sony is halting all sales of the game immediately and issuing full refunds to players on both PlayStation 5 and PC.

How to Get a Refund ?

For those who purchased Concord, refunds will be processed automatically. Here’s how it works depending on your platform:

• PlayStation Store / PlayStation Direct: Refunds will be automatically credited back to the original payment method. If the original payment option is unavailable, the funds will be added to the user’s PSN Wallet.
• Steam: Players who bought the game through Steam will receive an automatic refund within the next few days. Steam will send a confirmation once the process is complete.
• Epic Games Store: Epic will refund buyers in the coming days and will reach out directly with confirmation.
• Other Retailers: If the game was purchased physically or through a third-party store, refund eligibility will depend on the store’s individual policies.

Sony noted that refunds through PlayStation’s platforms could take up to 30 to 60 days to appear on statements.

A Temporary or Permanent Shutdown?

While Sony has not outright stated that Concord is gone for good, they have left the door open for a potential return. The statement mentions “exploring other options”, which suggests that the game could be reworked, perhaps shifting to a free-to-play model or being integrated into PlayStation Plus to attract a larger player base.

For now, though, Concord’s journey has come to an abrupt halt, leaving many to wonder whether the game’s developers can salvage its core ideas and revive it in a more successful form.
