Background Music Now Possible in Quest
The most notable and highly anticipated new feature is the ability to play Spotify in the background. Essentially, you can start playing your favorite rock playlist, then open a shooting game, and the music will continue to play over the game sounds.
This basic feature was sorely missing from the Quest ecosystem. Users can of course control playback (volume, skip tracks, etc.) without having to exit their game or application.
A Full-Featured Spotify App
The app provides access to the entire Spotify catalog, which includes over 100 million tracks, 7 million podcasts, and 350,000 audiobooks.
Users can also view video content from the platform, such as music videos or recorded podcasts, directly within the headset, turning it into a sort of private movie theater.
How Does It Work?
The Spotify app is available for download starting today on the Meta Quest Store. Once installed and linked to your account, you can start playing music, then “minimize” the app. The playback will continue in the background while you use other applications.
What’s the Verdict?
This is fantastic news that fills a clear gap in the Meta platform. The ability to overlay your own soundtrack on your VR games and experiences is a significant improvement in user comfort. It makes the Quest ecosystem more open and customizable, and less dependent on the musical choices of game developers.
The parallel with Apple’s Vision Pro is inevitable. One of the strengths of Apple’s headset is its seamless integration with in-house services, especially Apple Music.
