I dove into the archives (the 2024 comments) to pull out 5 films that you highly recommended. From classics to modern hits, slashers to paranormal—there’s something for everyone. Thanks again for your contributions! Now, get cozy, grab your blanket and candy. Here are 5 perfect films for tonight, recommended by our community!

Halloween

HALLOWEEN: THE NIGHT HE CAME HOME (1978) – JOHN CARPENTER

Suggested by (among others): gattuz
Let’s start with the obvious. How can you celebrate Halloween without watching Halloween? Several of you, including Michok69 who demanded a good John Carpenter, mentioned this foundational masterpiece. The film that elevated the slasher genre and introduced one of the most iconic killers in film history: Michael Myers. The story of a babysitter stalked by a white-masked figure in a small American town remains, 47 years later, a model of suspense. It’s the quintessential Halloween film, complete with its iconic music that has become a true anthem of dread.
Available for streaming on Canal+, Cine+ OCS, and Lionsgate+ (via Amazon Prime Video).

Scream

SCREAM (1996) – WES CRAVEN

Suggested by: beos
Last year, we discussed A Nightmare on Elm Street by the same director. However, for many, another masterpiece by Wes Craven remains his ’90s post-modern reinterpretation of the slasher genre. Recommended by beos, Scream has it all: a cult killer (Ghostface), characters who know the rules of horror movies, and the legendary question: What’s your favorite scary movie? It’s terrifying, funny, and wickedly clever. A cult killer and survival rules that redefined horror for a whole generation.
Available for streaming on Paramount+ (via Apple TV, Canal+, or Prime Video).

Insidious

INSIDIOUS (2010) – JAMES WAN

Suggested by: MultipasssDallas
If you enjoyed The Conjuring in our 2024 selection, user MultipasssDallas rightly reminded us that the Insidious series is just as potent. Directed by the same James Wan, this film is a must-see in modern horror. It tells the story of a family whose son falls into an unexplained coma and becomes a vessel for spirits trapped in the The Further. The film is full of perfectly executed jump scares and a creature that still haunts our nights. A terrifying dive into the Further that easily competes with its cousin, The Conjuring.
Available for streaming on Shadowz, Molotov TV, and Cine+ OCS.

Raw

RAW (2016) – JULIA DUCOURNAU

Suggested by: i_want_your_mac
A touch of French horror, and what a touch! Suggested by i_want_your_mac (who also mentioned Titane), Raw is one of the most impactful genre films of the last decade. It follows Justine, a staunch vegetarian, who starts veterinary school. During a hazing ritual, she is forced to eat raw meat… awakening an unsuspected nature within her. It’s a film about coming of age, desire, and hunger, treated with a visceral approach to body horror. Sensitive souls, be warned. A shocking, visceral, and intelligent film, proving that French horror stands second to none.
Available for streaming on Shadowz and Molotov TV.

No One Will Save You

NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU (2023) – BRIAN DUFFIELD

Suggested by: Starsk
Let’s finish with a recent gem, recommended by Starsk. Last year, we had Alien on the list. No One Will Save You revisits the theme of horror from beyond, but in a completely different style. The film follows Brynn, a young woman living in seclusion, who must face an alien invasion in her own home. What sets this film apart? It’s almost silent. No dialogue, just pure tension, incredible staging, and a memorably designed creature. An intense experience. An almost silent alien home invasion, incredibly intense and perfect for a night of tension.
Available for streaming exclusively on Disney+.

Zombeavers

BONUS: ZOMBEAVERS (2014) – JORDAN RUBIN

Suggested by: Myself
Let me add my two cents. Because Halloween is also about laughing (nervously). Horror isn’t just about vengeful spirits or masked killers. Sometimes, it’s also about zombie beavers. Yes, you read that right. Zombeavers is pure fun, a B-movie (or maybe Z-movie) that fully embraces its absurd concept: a group of young people spending a weekend by a lake is attacked by… zombie beavers. It’s ridiculous, it’s bloody, it’s stupid. And a big thank you to my nephew Rémi who introduced me to this completely bonkers film.
Available for streaming on Prime Video.
