Shenzhen, the renowned tech hub of China, dazzled the world by setting two global records with a display of over 10,000 drones during the national holiday celebration, overshadowing traditional fireworks.
A Stunning Display in the Skies of Shenzhen
Shenzhen made history with drones by orchestrating a luminous display using 10,197 drones, breaking previous records of this type. Known for tech giants like DJI and Huawei, the city used these drones to create impressive light formations above Shenzhen Bay. The drones formed various shapes, including a majestic eagle in flight and iconic city landmarks. The event, titled A City in the Sky, with Great Possibilities
, captured the attention of thousands of spectators.
Two World Records
During the event, Shenzhen didn’t just break one, but two world records. The first was for the most drones controlled simultaneously by a single computer, and of course, the largest number of drones used in a light show. These technological feats demonstrate China’s growing expertise in the field. Shenzhen, already a pioneer in drone technology, continues to push the boundaries of what these devices can achieve, both artistically and technologically.
The Shenzhen show followed another impressive event held in September in Jilin Province, where 7,598 drones had already lit up the sky to celebrate another occasion.
Drone Swarms and Their Applications
Drone swarm development in China isn’t limited to entertainment. These devices are also used for surveillance and, in some instances, for military applications. Coordinated swarms, as noted by Interesting Engineering, now play a crucial role in modern warfare.
Better Than Fireworks?
Drone shows are redefining the future of visual entertainment. The precision and synchronization of these swarms provide stunning displays, in China and around the world. While France may not yet be breaking records, drone-based shows are becoming more common and are even replacing fireworks, which sometimes pose safety issues (hello, firefighters).
Have you ever witnessed a drone-based show? What did you think of it?
