Unchanged Design with a Subtle Twist
As for design, there are no leaks suggesting any major changes. Thus, this second generation should retain its recognizable compact, circular shape. Some rumors—possibly just wishful thinking—hint at the introduction of new colors. However, Apple might choose to stick with white (as with its AirPods), a classic and instantly recognizable color.
Furthermore, Apple does not seem to be considering making the device thinner, despite criticisms regarding its thickness. Deemed impractical for some wallets, the tag would remain unchanged, as Cupertino believes a thinner format could compromise its performance and detection. As with the original model, Apple would leave it to other manufacturers to offer slimmer alternatives. As for battery life, no changes either: the CR2032 button cell—providing about one year of usage—might be used again.

Enhanced Security Against Misuse
Although the AirTag has quickly established itself as a useful daily accessory, it has also faced criticism for malicious misuse, including harassment or unconsented surveillance. Despite existing safeguards (alerts, sound signals, dedicated Android app), Apple is planning to further strengthen its strategy with the second generation of the device.
According to various sources, the company is particularly working on preventing any physical disabling of the speaker, a method sometimes used to bypass warning sounds. Other enhancements are also being considered, such as the integration of new tracking detection protocols, which might be directly incorporated into iOS 19.
Potential Unveiling at WWDC 2025?
According to Mark Gurman, the second-generation AirTags, internally codenamed B589
, are expected to arrive around mid-2025. Apple is reportedly in the final stages of testing with its Asian partners, anticipating an imminent launch.
On his part, the leaker Kosutami, usually well-informed about Apple accessories, suggests a release scheduled for May or June 2025. This timeline would perfectly align with WWDC 2025, set to start on June 9.
For security, better detection of abusive tracking attempts would be welcome: quicker and more explicit alerts, a speaker that cannot be disabled—or only through a secure code.
Finally, while sharing a link with another user is already possible, Apple could go further by offering a multi-user mode, particularly useful for families or groups sharing everyday items.
