With the release of iOS 18.2, Apple has introduced a new API that allows iPhone users to set third-party apps as their default options for handling calls and messages. WhatsApp has now supported this feature with its latest iOS update.

WhatsApp Becomes a Default App for Calls and Texts
As noted by WABetaInfo, the most recent update to WhatsApp Messenger for iPhone finally allows users to select the app as their default messaging or calling client. Once enabled in the system settings, any interaction with a phone number or contact link (e.g., via Safari, Contacts, or Maps) will use WhatsApp instead of the built-in iOS Phone or Messages app.
This shift is part of a broader evolution of Apple’s mobile system, which began with iOS 14 for browsers and mail clients, and expanded with iOS 18.2 to include other application categories. This move primarily showcases a strong push towards interoperability. Although this opening was initially prompted by the requirements of the DMA (Digital Markets Act) in Europe, Apple has decided to extend it to all users, regardless of their location.
