Harry Potter Series Gets a Major Casting Update – What You Need to Know

As anticipation builds for the upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO Max ¹, we’re finally starting to see the cast come together. After more than a decade since the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the magical world created by J.K. Rowling is making its return, but this time, it’s heading to television. Here’s what we know so far about the updated casting and who will be stepping into iconic roles.

New Faces for Classic Characters

As expected, the casting process for the Harry Potter series is gradually unveiling some exciting and surprising names. One of the most highly anticipated roles is Draco Malfoy, Harry’s rival at Hogwarts, who will be played by newcomer Lox Pratt². He takes over the role from Tom Felton, who portrayed Draco in the films, though Felton is still involved with the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Joining the Malfoys, Johnny Flynn will play Lucius Malfoy, Draco’s infamous father and a staunch supporter of Voldemort. The role of Draco’s mother, Narcissa, has yet to be announced, but fans are eagerly speculating about who will take on the role of the aristocratic witch.

Another notable addition is the casting of Daniel Rigby and Bel Powley as Vernon and Petunia Dursley, Harry’s aunt and uncle, who were originally portrayed by Richard Griffiths and Fiona Shaw in the films (³). This casting announcement brings a fresh energy to the series, with both Rigby and Powley known for their strong performances in various television dramas. However, the roles of Harry’s parents, Lily and James Potter, have not yet been revealed, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.

The Weasley Family: Who’s In and Who’s Out?

The Weasley family, one of the heartwarming cornerstones of the series, is also getting a fresh look. Katherine Parkinson, known for her role in The IT Crowd, has been cast as Molly Weasley, the beloved matriarch of the Weasley clan³. Parkinson takes over from Julie Walters, who portrayed the character in the films. Fans are now wondering who will take on the roles of the Weasley twins, Fred and George, as well as the youngest Weasley sibling, Ginny, and their father, Arthur.

Arthur Weasley, who works at the Ministry of Magic, is yet to be cast, but the role of the Weasley patriarch will no doubt be pivotal in establishing the family’s loving, yet mischievous dynamic. Fans are also eagerly awaiting the casting of Ginny, Harry’s eventual wife, and the family’s lovable troublemakers, Fred and George.

Hogwarts Faculty and New Faces

The magical world of Hogwarts wouldn’t be complete without its dedicated staff. One major casting decision already announced is that John Lithgow will portray the wise and kind Albus Dumbledore. Lithgow, known for his roles in The Crown and 3rd Rock from the Sun, brings a gravitas to the role that will surely add a new dimension to the character. Alongside Lithgow, we’ll see Janet McTeer take on the role of Minerva McGonagall, a character beloved by fans for her sharp wit and maternal instincts.

Paapa Essiedu, known for his role in Killing Eve, will bring Severus Snape to life, while Shaun of the Dead star Nick Frost will take on the role of Rubeus Hagrid. Other notable castings include Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, the bumbling Minister of Magic.

New Students and Supporting Roles

The casting announcements have not been limited to just the main players. Several new faces are being introduced as Hogwarts students, and it’s clear that the series will feature a new generation of talent. Lox Pratt will portray Draco Malfoy, but other new characters include Leo Early as the explosive Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil (likely alongside her twin sister Padma), and Sienna Moosah as Lavande Brown.

These newcomers will join the already confirmed leads of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, completing the trio that will lead us back into the world of magic and wonder.

What’s Next for the Harry Potter Series?

Though many roles remain to be announced, the Harry Potter series is shaping up to be a faithful yet fresh take on the beloved books. With Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Killing Eve and Succession, serving as showrunner, there is high hope that the series will successfully capture the magic of the original story while introducing it to a whole new generation.

The first season of the series is slated to debut in 2026 on HBO Max, but with seven seasons planned over the next decade, this is just the beginning of an incredible journey back to Hogwarts. As we await further casting updates and more details about the show, one thing is certain – this new Harry Potter series is going to be one for the ages.

In summary, fans can expect a refreshed cast that will bring new interpretations to old favorites, while maintaining the magic and heart of the original.
