“I Wanted It to Stop”: Filming ‘The Penguin’ Was Extremely Challenging After ‘The Batman’

Following the success of The Batman, fans eagerly anticipated the expansion of the Dark Knight’s universe, both on the big and small screens. While the cancellation of Arkham Asylum, a series initially set to focus on Gotham’s police, raised a few eyebrows, all eyes have now turned to The Penguin. As a follow-up to The Batman, the new series aims to deliver the same dark, gritty feel, with Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot.

The Penguin: Almost The Batman Part 2

The Penguin 2Pin

Created by Lauren LeFranc, The Penguin is shaping up to be an intelligent and seamless extension of Matt Reeves’ vision for Gotham. Much like in The Batman, Colin Farrell continues to steal the spotlight with his masterful portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot, this time under even more extensive prosthetics. But while Farrell’s performance has garnered praise, it turns out that the process of becoming the Penguin was far more exhausting than anyone might have guessed.

In an interview with Total Film, Farrell opened up about the toll it took: “Don’t get me wrong, I loved [making The Penguin], but it really got to me. Toward the end, I was complaining to anyone who would listen, saying I just wanted it all to stop.” He went on to share that the demanding process of wearing heavy prosthetics and staying in character as Cobblepot wore him down to the point of wanting a break.

“Lauren [LeFranc] asked me, ‘If I can find a way to work this out, would you continue?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely.’ Maybe in a year, I’ll feel ready. But when I finished [Season 1], I was thinking, ‘I never want to put that damn costume and mask on again.’”

No Immediate Return for The Penguin Season 2

Colin Farrell’s candid comments suggest that a second season of The Penguin may not be arriving as soon as some fans might hope. Despite his exhaustion, it’s clear that Farrell is not entirely done with the character, as his return in The Batman 2 has already been confirmed. While it may take time for him to re-enter Cobblepot’s world, Farrell’s portrayal has left an indelible mark on the Gotham universe, and audiences will undoubtedly be eager to see more.

The Creative Forces Behind The Penguin

Helmed by writer and producer Lauren LeFranc, who is known for her work on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Chuck, The Penguin promises a fresh yet familiar exploration of Gotham’s criminal underworld. Joining Farrell in the cast are Cristin Milioti, Theo Rossi, and David H. Holmes, while Craig Zobel, acclaimed for his work on The Leftovers and The Hunt, directs the series.

The Penguin is set to premiere on Max on September 20, and fans are already counting down the days to see what this next chapter in Gotham’s story will hold. Though Farrell may have found the experience challenging, there’s no doubt that his portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot will continue to be a major draw for viewers.
