What Does This Likely Stolen iPad Pro Tell Us About the Supply Chain?

Latest rumors suggest Apple is set to update its iPad Pro with two major upgrades: the introduction of the M5 chip and a minimum of 12GB of RAM.

Leaked Unboxing Videos

Last week, two Russian YouTube channels, Wylsacom and Romancev768, released unboxing videos of a pre-production model of the upcoming iPad Pro. These sources had previously disclosed the existence of the 14-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the M4 chip before its official release in 2024, lending credibility to their new information. Additionally, there’s a possibility that this iPad was stolen from the supply chain (perhaps from a warehouse?), suggesting that initial production batches have been completed and are now stored in warehouses awaiting the first orders.

The videos reveal the presence of an M5 chip, but notably, 12GB of RAM in the 256GB / 512GB storage models. This is a significant upgrade, as the current iPad Pro M4 tops out at 8GB of RAM for the 256 and 512GB configurations, reserving 16GB for the 1TB and 2TB models.

According to Geekbench 6 results (also mentioned in the leaks), the M5 chip shows up to a 12% increase in multi-core CPU performance and a 36% improvement in graphical performance compared to the M4 generation released in May 2024. These benchmarks elevate the iPad Pro M5 to the level of the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone Air, which now also share the same 12GB memory allocation.

Minimal Aesthetic Changes, However…

In terms of design, no revolutionary changes are announced following last year’s shift to OLED and the thinning of the bezels. However, the videos suggest a minor tweak: the iPad Pro branding might no longer be engraved on the back of the device (similar to the iPhone).

One rumor involved the addition of a second front camera, designed to enhance video calls in both portrait and landscape modes. However, no evidence of this second sensor appears in the videos, where only an ambient light sensor is spotted on the top bezel.

Nonetheless, Mark Gurman (Bloomberg) states in his newsletter Power On that internal prototypes at Apple indeed include this dual module. According to him, it could be a late decision by Apple, which has previously dropped features that were tested at advanced stages, like a second Dock connector on the original iPad.

Imminent Announcement

With an official announcement expected by the end of October, the upcoming iPad Pros could be unveiled in the coming weeks — possibly even on October 30. Apple will then bank on the M5 + 12GB RAM combination to appeal to professionals and creatives, solidifying its tablet as a true laptop substitute.
